Boeing and the union representing 33,000 of its workers have reached a new labor agreement, averting a potential costly strike at the company’s main factories. The tentative deal includes significant 25% raises over a span of four years, along with improvements to health-care costs and retirement benefits for the employees. The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, which represents Boeing’s workers in the Seattle area and Oregon, announced that the agreement also includes a commitment from Boeing to manufacture its next aircraft in the Pacific Northwest region.
The agreement marks a significant achievement for Boeing’s new CEO, Kelly Ortberg, who has been vocal about the company’s need to regain solid ground amidst various safety and quality crises. The new agreement is crucial for Boeing’s financial recovery, as the company has faced significant challenges as a result of its past mistakes. While the tentative deal has been reached, workers are yet to approve the agreement through a vote scheduled for September 12. The current labor agreement was set to expire shortly, and in the absence of a resolution, a strike could have commenced immediately. The union’s initial demands included over 40% raises, reflecting the workers’ expectations and the importance of fair compensation and benefits.
The new contract offer presented by Boeing provides the largest general wage increase in the company’s history, along with reduced medical cost sharing to enhance the accessibility of healthcare for employees. Furthermore, the agreement includes augmented contributions from the company towards employees’ retirement benefits, as well as enhancements aimed at promoting a better work-life balance for the workers. Stephanie Pope, the chief executive of Boeing’s commercial airplane unit, expressed optimism about the proposed contract, highlighting the diverse benefits it offers to the workforce.
